BEIRUT: Caretaker Justice Minister Shakib Qortbawi said Thursday the Legislation and Advisory Committee was preparing a draft law to legalize civil marriage in Lebanon, one that would contribute to empowering women by granting them equal civil rights.
Qortbawi’s comments came during a seminar about women’s rights organized by Avenir Liban with the cooperation of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women at the Bar Association headquarters in the Beirut neighborhood of Adlieh.
“Ratifying civil marriage contracts in Lebanon is not enough, because couples are choosing a foreign law to govern their marriage contracts. We need a Lebanese law to govern such contracts,” Qortbawi said.
“There is tangible progress in Lebanon with respect to empowering women, but rights are taken and not granted,” he said.
