TRIPOLI, Lebanon: Eight families were evacuated Friday from an apartment building in Tripoli, north Lebanon, after large foundation cracks appeared in the structures.
Tenants of the nine-story Al-Manar building near Khadija mosque in Abu Samra were ordered out of their apartments at 10 a.m. after the structure began to show cracks, security sources said.
Municipal engineering experts, after examining the structure, deemed the building unsafe and recommended it be demolished, the sources said.
The engineering experts said large foundation cracks were due to the construction of two additional floors to the originally seven-story building.
Tenants had begged Hilal al-Mir, who lives on the seventh floor, not to build extra floors because the building foundations were not adequate to support additional weight.
