BEIRUT: Hezbollah and Amal Movement back Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun as their candidate for the presidential elections, a report published Monday said.

“There is a conviction within Hezbollah and the Amal Movement that there could be no another candidate than Aoun,” the report, published by Hezbollah-affiliated al-Akhbar daily, said quoting Hezbollah sources.

The sources described the threats of a political vacuum in the presidency post office as futile and said Hezbollah prefers vacuum over extending the president’s term.

“Vacuum is better than the extension of the current president’s term, or electing a weak Christian President,” the sources said.

The term of President Michel Sleiman ends in May 2014. The president has said he is against extending his own term.
