BEIRUT: President Michel Sleiman discussed the Cabinet crisis and other issues with MP Mohammad Raad, the head of Hezbollah’s Loyalty to the Resistance bloc, a statement from the president’s office said.
The president and Raad also discussed political developments, various local and regional issues as well as the importance of preserving internal stability to meet the upcoming constitutional deadlines in solidarity and calm.
The next presidential election is due in May 2014.
Despite Hezbollah's repeated criticism of Sleiman, the party has maintained a line of communication with the president by similar periodical visits.
Political and official sources told The Daily Star Sunday Sleiman was determined to open channels of communications with all parties – including the resistance group.
Raad said earlier during the day that Lebanon’s institutions are falling apart and the country needs to be rebuilt as he called on Lebanese political rivals to engage in a discussion over the disputed files in the country.
“I would like to call our brothers and partners in the nation to be careful that time is running and we need to restore the activity in the institutions of this country and to listen to each other,” he said.
“Let us engage in a dialogue and understanding; if you do not like the form of the Dialogue table or the agenda of the Dialogue, we can change [them],” he said.
“You silence, however, is plunging you in the abyss and you are leading your partners toward greater dangers,” Raad warned.
