SIDON, Lebanon: A bomb went off overnight Tuesday inside a parked car belonging to a supporter of Salafist Sheikh Ahmad Assir in the southern city of Sidon. There were no casualties.
Security sources said the bomb, planted inside Mohammad Batakji’s silver Mercedes, was parked outside his house in Taamir Ain al-Hilweh.
No one was hurt from the late Tuesday bombing. However, the car sustained heavy damage.
Five suspects were arrested last week in connection to two separate attacks against Army checkpoints south and north of Sidon that led to the killing of a soldier. The Army said the two were suicide attacks.
Supporters of Assir, who remains at large following a crackdown on his men in the Sidon village of Abra earlier this summer, are suspected of being involved in the attacks targeting the military.
