BEIRUT: Military Prosecutor Saqr Saqr charged two supporters of fugitive Salafist Sheikh Ahmad Assir Thursday with attempted murder and inciting sectarian strife, judicial sources told The Daily Star.
The sources said Saqr charged Mohammad al-Err and Salah Alaeddine who were recently arrested by the Lebanese Army over the June clashes between Assir’s supporters and the military in the Sidon suburb of Abra.
Charges also included forming an armed gang with the aim of committing crimes against people and their property, undermining state authority and harming the state’s prestige.
The Army engaged in deadly clashes with Assir’s armed supporters in June where the fighting left at least 18 soldiers and 28 gunmen dead.
Assir and dozens of his supporters have been charged with the same accusations earlier this year.
However, the 45-year-old preacher remains at large.
Saqr referred the case of the charged two to Investigative Judge Riyad Abu Ghayda.
