BAALBEK, Lebanon: Two Omani nationals were kidnapped in the Bekaa Valley city of Baalbek Thursday shortly after arriving to Lebanon, security sources told The Daily Star.
Five gunmen in a Grand Cherokee with tinted windows and no license plate intercepted the taxi of the two foreigners in the Kayal neighborhood of Baalbek, the sources added, requesting to remain anonymous.
The taxi was coming from Rafik Hariri International Airport, where it picked up the two Omanis.
A wave of kidnap-for-ransom operations has swept the country over the past years, particularly in the Bekaa Valley.
Some of the abductions targeted foreigners. In March 2011, seven Estonian cyclists were snatched at gunpoint near the city of Zahle and were released in July of the same year in return for a ransom.
They turned up at the French Embassy in Beirut 113 days after their abduction. The details of the operation remain unclear.
