BEIRUT: Tens of Progressive Socialist Party members blocked Friday a road in the Beirut neighborhood of Msaitbeh, preventing security forces removing illegal construction in the area.
The Internal Security Forces were dispatched earlier in the day to demolish houses and individual rooms illegally built on public and private property in the neighborhood.
Their efforts were thwarted when PSP supporters blocked the road with burning tires and garbage cans.
Holding PSP flags and posters with the figure of a star – a symbol of the Druze community – the protesters chanted slogans against the police’s actions, urging the ISF to carry out demolitions instead in the Beirut's southern suburb, a Hezbollah stronghold.
The move is part of the Interior Ministry's plan to remove illegal construction nationwide.
Police have been met with opposition in both the northern city of Tripoli and the capital's suburbs.
