BEIRUT: Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun and Marada Movement leader MP Suleiman Franjieh held a reconciliation meeting last week after a recent increase in tension between the two groups, an FPM source told The Daily Star.
“The meeting was held at the residence of a mutual friend and it was very positive,” said the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The meeting was held in presence of FPM member and caretaker Energy Minister Gebran Bassil, Franjieh's son Tony and former Minister Youssef Saadeh, the source said.
According to the source, disputes surfaced between the two allied groups over differences between Franjieh and the FPM related to governmental issues.
Tension between the Marada and the FPM reached its peak when the Marada supported the extension of Lebanon’s Army chief Maj. Gen. Jean Kahwagi's term, a proposal that was rejected by Aoun.
Caretaker Defense Minister Fayez Ghosn, of Franjieh’s Marada bloc, signed an administrative decree on July 31 extending Kahwagi's term for two years after Parliament, the caretaker Cabinet and other officials failed to reach a consensus on a legal procedure to extend the term of the Army chief.
