BEIRUT: Cardinal Beshara Rai reiterated Friday that Qatar has promised to help resolve the case of the two bishops kidnapped in Syria.
“We thank Qatar for their help in the release of Azaz hostages and its promise to unveil the fate of the kidnapped bishops,” he said speaking from Beirut’s Rafik Hariri International Airport upon his return from an official visit to Qatar.
Rai said that the Qatari emir informed him that Qatari officials have already started working to determine the fate and location of the bishops.
“The problem is that no one knows where the kidnapped bishops are,” he said.
Aleppo’s Greek Orthodox Archbishop Paul Yazigi and Syriac Orthodox Archbishop Yohanna Ibrahim were abducted in April by armed men near the Turkish border.
During talks with Rai in Doha Wednesday, Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamid al-Thani promised to help secure their release, but no tangible progress in the case has been made as yet.
