BEIRUT: Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblatt hailed Monday Speaker Nabih Berri’s recent call for dialogue aimed at ending Lebanon’s political deadlock.
“The Progressive Socialist Party backs every call for dialogue because it will help prevent Lebanon from plunging into the abyss,” said Jumblatt in his weekly stance to the PSP-affiliated Al-Anbaa website.
Jumblatt said that resuming National Dialogue would lead to a breakthrough over the divisive matter of Hezbollah’s military role in Syria.
“Resuming National Dialogue will help reinforce the policy of disassociation [from Syria crisis] and renew the call for all sides to withdraw from Syria, starting with the resistance which has turned its weapons away from Israel,” he said.
“The resistance's role should only be limited at the border [with Israel] as Berri has said and this requires the resumption of discussions over a comprehensive national defense strategy,” Jumblatt added.
Berri put forward over the weekend an initiative to end the ongoing political crisis in Lebanon entailing all-party talks to address some of the country’s thorniest items.
Berri’s multi-point initiative includes addressing the issue of establishing a national defense strategy for the country.
