BEIRUT: A Syrian woman and her son drowned in a pond in the Damour Valley, south of Beirut, a security source told The Daily Star Monday.
A Civil Defense team found the bodies of the Syrian woman, 40, and her three-year-old son in the pond. They had been reported missing earlier in the day.
A medical examiner said the two had swallowed large quantities of water.
Preliminary reports indicated that the mother was attempting to save her son who first fell in the pond.
Separately, rescue teams retrieved the body of an 11-year-old Syrian girl from the sea in the village of Ghaziyeh, south of Beirut.
Manar Ali Khalaf drowned while swimming in the beach Sunday night. Her body was transferred to Alaeddine Hospital.
Khalaf lived with her family, who fled the fighting in Syria to settle in the Ghaziyeh area.
