BEIRUT: Caretaker Interior Minister Marwan Charbel discussed Monday the possibility of activating municipality police squads to assist in safeguarding national security.
The subject was discussed at a ministry meeting chaired by Charbel with the heads of the security and civil departments present at his office.
The meeting was also meant for the ministry to prepare for an upcoming Sept. 5 conference for mayors and mukhtars across the country at UNESCO Palace.
Participants deliberated ways of activating the work of the municipal police, so they can support the work of existing security bodies across the country.
“This step comes in line with the implementation of the ‘Every citizen is a guard’ policy which aims at involving municipalities and mukhtars in the monitoring process and coordinating with security forces to better foil attempts to undermine stability,” Charbel said during the meeting.
