BEIRUT: Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati saluted the Turkish government Monday for supporting Lebanon with its peacekeeping personnel, as the contingent withdrew a bulk of its troops from the mission.
Mikati made his comments during a meeting with Turkish Ambassador to Lebanon Inan Ozyildiz at the Grand Serail.
The U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon announced last month that Turkey had made a decision to pull its peacekeepers out of the mission by the first week of September.
About 280 troops are set to leave, with 58 remaining to support the maritime task force.
The contingent began pulling out of their posts over the weekend in the southern Tyre town of Sheaitieh. The contingent is expected to leave by the end of the week, with an Italian contingent set to take over in its place.
