BEIRUT: A number of Iraqi refugees left Syria via Lebanon Monday, making their way directly to the Beirut airport with the help of General Security, according to a security source.
The Iraqis arrived to Lebanon from Syria and were taken to Rafik Hariri International Airport to catch a flight to an undisclosed third country.
General Security organized the logistics of the trip to the airport, according to the source.
A higher-level security source clarified that the Iraqis were being transported under the supervision of UNHCR and the International Organization for Migration.
Roberta Russo, a spokesperson for the U.N. agency said the trip was not an evacuation procedure and had been planned in advance, in line with the IOM’s resettlement program.
