BEIRUT: The Lebanon branch of the Muslim Brotherhood said Wednesday Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime would bear full responsibility for any potential military intervention in Syria.
“We are with our principle of opposing any foreign military intervention in the Arab and Islamic region but hold the Syrian regime responsible for any outside operation against Syria,” a statement from Al-Jamaa al-Islamiya said.
The Lebanese party said the continuing crimes of the government in Damascus against the will of the Syrian people had provided “opportunists in our region pretexts that serve their goals and interests.”
President Barack Obama said over the weekend he would wait for congressional authorization for military strikes against targets in Syria over the Assad regime’s alleged use of chemical weapons in a Damascus suburb last month that killed hundreds.
Al-Jamaa al-Islamiya said it believed the potential U.S.-led strike would not aim to support “the Syrian people’s revolution, but protect the interests of the [U.S.] and Zionist entity in the region.”
“This explains the U.S. administration not providing any unique weapons to the opposition that could pose a real threat to the Assad regime,” the statement said.
