SIDON, Lebanon: A supporter of fugitive Salafist Sheikh Ahmad Assir was detained Wednesday in the southern city of Sidon, security sources told The Daily Star.
Mohammad Kouta was among three arrested at an Army checkpoint in the southern city, the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said.
The other two were wanted individuals, the sources added.
Assir and his followers were involved in fierce clashes in the Sidon suburb of Abra in June that left dozens of soldiers and Salafist fighters dead.
Nearly 40 people including Assir were charged with murder, arms possession and other crimes over the clashes.
Assir and some of his closest associates who are accused in the deadly events remain at large.
