BEIRUT: Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun met Thursday with Saudi Ambassador to Lebanon Ali Awad Asiri, the second meeting between the two since recent media reports of strained ties between Aoun and the March 8 coalition.
Asiri visited Aoun in his Rabieh residence and left without making any statement.
The Saudi envoy also paid a rare visit to the FPM leader in July and they both agreed over the need to preserve the country’s national interests.
The meeting came after a public spat between Aoun and Speaker Nabih Berri.
Aoun described the renewed ties with Riyadh as openness from his movement to different groups.
Ties between Aoun and Riyadh have been strained ever since the lawmaker backed the Hezbollah-led March 8 camp.
Earlier during the day, Asiri held talks with Kataeb leader Amin Gemayel over regional and domestic developments, mainly the possible U.S. military strike against Syria and the stalled Cabinet formation in Lebanon.
