BEIRUT: Free Patriotic Movement leader Michel Aoun met Thursday with Saudi Ambassador to Lebanon Ali Awad Asiri, the second meeting between the two since recent media reports of strained ties between Aoun and the March 8 coalition.
Asiri visited Aoun in his home in Rabieh and left without making any statement. The Saudi envoy also paid a rare visit to the FPM leader in July when they both agreed on the need to preserve the country’s national interests.
The meeting came after a public spat between Aoun and Speaker Nabih Berri. Aoun described the renewed ties with Riyadh as openness by his movement to different groups.
Ties between Aoun and Riyadh have been strained for years since the lawmaker backed the Hezbollah-led March 8 camp.
Earlier Thursday, Asiri held talks with Kataeb leader Amin Gemayel over issues including the possible U.S. military strike on Syria and the stalled Cabinet formation.
