BEIRUT: Hezbollah MP Hussein Musawi said Friday the U.S. was gearing for significant military action against Syria rather than a retaliatory strike over the regime’s alleged use of chemical arms and warned that such an attack would result in a “global disaster” with severe consequences.
“They are preparing for the war against Syria under the pretext of a humane strike but the president [Barack Obama] is seeking authorization from Congress which means he is heading toward a bigger war than a punitive operation ... to drag Syria into the U.S.-Zionist-Takfiri tripartite formula,” he said, according to a statement from Hezbollah.
The U.S. is seeking international support for a possible strike against Syria aimed at weakening the capabilities of President Bashar Assad over its alleged use of chemical weapons.
Washington has accused Assad of using poisonous gas on Syrians on several occasions this year including the deadly Aug. 21 attack in the Eastern Ghota suburb of Damascus. Syria denied the allegations.
U.N. chemical inspectors tasked with determining whether chemical arms were used in Eastern Ghota are still examining evidence from the scene of the attack.
“The region faces an international disaster, the repercussions of which no one will be spared from if the lunatics in the U.S. administration remain on their [path] of transgression and tyranny,” Musawi said.
He also accused “some Gulf states” of financing the war in Lebanon’s neighbor and the Syrian opposition of “encouraging the Americans to invade and burn Syria.”
“The U.S. Administration does not look at the Arab and Muslim region beyond Israeli interests in addition to its vital and strategic interests and uses humanitarian and ethical principles to cover up its crimes,” he said.
Hezbollah’s parliamentary bloc warned Thursday against the strike, describing it as a “direct, organized terrorism.”
He also called on the “free people of the world” to fend off a possible strike on Syria.
“I call on the free people of the world to be prepared and be ready to defeat this American aggression ... the voices of the courageous and wise of civilians in the Arab, Muslim and international communities should rise for the sake of resisting the U.S. and holding it accountable for its crimes and what it could carry out in the near future,” Musawi said.
