BEIRUT: Lebanon’s General Security arrested a Syrian over the weekend near Beirut’s Nahr Ibrahim river for trying to manufacture explosives, security sources told The Daily Star. Army Intelligence also raided several homes in the Araya village of the Aley region and arrested several Syrians suspected of involvement in the string of violence the country has recently witnessed, the sources added.
Ahmad Oussama Toumani, a Syrian worker, was arrested in a farming store near the Nahr Ibrahim river, the sources said.
He was seized trying to prepare explosives with flammable material and plastic bottles, they added.
The sources said Toumani confessed during preliminary investigations to contacting people in Syria for instructions on how to prepare explosives.
Also Sunday, the car of an anti-Salafist sheikh exploded after Salafist factions in the northern city of Tripoli tossed a hand grenade in its direction only a few minutes after Sheikh Saadeddine Ghiyeh stepped out of his vehicle, security sources said.
