TRIPOLI, Lebanon: A man from the north city of Tripoli was arrested over the weekend for selling arms to Syrian rebels, a move that drew the ire of locals who briefly blocked a road demanding his release.
Security sources told The Daily Star the Lebanese Army arrested Sunday evening Yehya Jassem al-Dandashi on charges of selling weapons to the Free Syrian Army.
Local men from the Tripoli neighborhood of Bab al-Tabbaneh, where Dandashi hails from, blocked the international highway linking Tripoli with Akkar around 2 a.m.
The protesters demanded that Dandashi, better known as Abu Maasam, be set free.
The highway was reopened at 6:30 a.m. Monday following intensive contacts, the sources said.
