BEIRUT: Caretaker Information Minister Walid Daouk asked the Press Federation and the Journalists’ Union to take the necessary legal measures against the editor of Ad-Diyar newspaper for slandering the caretaker prime minister.
The editor-in-chief of Ad-Diyar, Charles Ayoub, described caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati in Sunday’s editorial as “the big thief” and accused him of stealing the people’s money to make his own fortune.
Daouk said of the editorial in his request to the media unions: “What we have read [in Ayoub’s article] surpasses freedom of expression ... and is yellow journalism.”
“Newspapers, magazines, television channels and radio stations should not be turned into a platform to insult people and be used to disrespect them whoever they are,” he added.
Daouk also telephoned caretaker Justice Minister Shakib Qortbawi with the same request.
Later, head of the Journalists’ Union, Elias Aoun issued a statement in which he said that the Higher Council for Journalism would hold a meeting in the coming days to study the case.
