BEIRUT: The heads of the Press Federation and Journalists Union condemned Tuesday the defamation of caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati by the editor-in-chief of a local newspaper.
“I relayed to the caretaker prime minister the federation’s condemnation of the assault against him,” Mohammad Baalbaki, the head of the Press Federation, told reporters after meeting Mikati.
“The caretaker prime minister informed me that the judicial procedure will take its course through the Lebanese judiciary,” he added.
Charles Ayoub, the editor-in-chief of Ad-Diyar newspaper, described Mikati in an editorial Sunday as a “coward” and the “biggest thief in Lebanon.”
Elias Aoun, president of the Journalists Union, also condemned the assault in a meeting with Mikati. Aoun said he would meet Ayoub in a bid to end the dispute amicably.
