BEIRUT: A group of gunmen ambushed a man in the Kafaat area in Beirut’s southern suburbs Sunday, leaving him seriously wounded, the National News Agency reported.
Following news of the ambush, the security situation grew tense in the neighborhood of Laylaki in Beirut’s southern suburbs as armed men spread in the area and heavy gunfire was heard, prompting the Lebanese Army to deploy in the neighborhood.
The NNA identify the victim as Hasan Hajoula.
The Army later released a statement on the incident.
“At 6:20 p.m. this evening, and due to previous family-related problems, gunmen riding a four-wheel-drive Jeep in Kafaat used light arms to shoot at one of the citizens which led to him being severely injured,” the NNA statement said.
“In this regard, armed forces were deployed in the mentioned area to maintain security and stability, and these forces are pursuing the gunmen in order to arrest them and bring them to court,” it added.
Members of the Hajoula family and those of the powerful Zeaiter clan fought with automatic weapons in Laylaki last month, resulting in the with death of one member of the Zeaiter family and reigniting an old feud that had claimed the life of a Hajoula man last year.
Clashes between the two families have been growing more frequent in recent weeks, and are said to be linked to a personal dispute between young men from both families dating back at least a year.
The Laylaki neighborhood in particular has previously witnessed several similar clan gunfights.
