Family to file charges over capsized-boat death

SIDON, Lebanon: The family of a woman who died following a boating accident vowed Thursday to file charges against the owner of the craft.

Hanadi Atwi, 30, died shortly after a tourist boat capsized off the shore of Sidon Sunday.

Atwi’s uncle, Wassim Haidar, said the family hoped pursuing the case legally would help prevent future tragedies of this nature. “Of course filing charges will not bring my niece back, but it may stop people from being reckless with others’ lives,” he said.

“They should be held accountable.” Haidar says he asked Hussein Chalhoub, the owner of the boat, to return to shore multiple times before the accident occurred.

Security sources said Chalhoub had been detained pending an investigation. Haidar called on authorities to enforce safety measures for boats taking passengers out to sea.
