BEIRUT: Supporters of fugitive Sheikh Ahmad Assir rallied in Martyrs’ Square in Downtown Beirut after Friday prayers in support of the Islamist preacher and to condemn recent political events in the country.
After gathering in Mohammad al-Amin mosque for prayers, a group of around 50 protesters gathered in the square and chanted in support of the militant Assir who is believed to be in hiding.
“God protect you Ahmad Assir,” the crowds chanted.
Assir has been a strong supporter of the Syrian uprising and strongly condemns Hezbollah’s armed presence in the country.
A speaker at the rally praised Assir, criticized Hezbollah and suggested the party fought in the bloody clashes in Abra in June.
Assir and his followers fought an intense gun battle with the Lebanese Army in the Sidon suburb of Abra in June that killed 18 soldiers and 28 gunmen.
Investigators have charged Assir and 36 others over the clashes, but Assir’s whereabouts remain unknown.
