BEIRUT: An anti-harassment group encouraged students Wednesday to report any cases of sexual harassment to security and judicial agencies, warning of a rise in such incidents at the beginning of the school year.
The group behind the “No to Sexual Harassment in Lebanon” campaign said women were more vulnerable at the start of the academic year due to crowded public transport facilities.
“Many young girls and women have engaged with us and broken the wall of silence and faced down harassment and reported harassers,” the organization, “No to Violence,” said in a statement.
“We call on everyone in Lebanon to immediately report to the security forces and judiciary any sexual harassment and domestic violence to punish criminals under the rule of law and the Lebanese justice system, which we trust.”
A survey by the group earlier this month showed two-thirds of expat women in Beirut had been harassed.
