BEIRUT: President Michel Sleiman postponed a scheduled visit to Saudi Arabia this week, his office said Sunday.
"The president’s visit which was scheduled for Tuesday to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was postponed to a date that will be announced later," the statement said.
The statement however did not specify reasons behind the delay.
Saudi Ambassador to Lebanon Ali Assiri held talks with Sleiman Saturday at Baabda Palace and discussed details of the visit.
Sleiman was also expected to meet former Prime Minister Saad Hariri in Riyadh during his scheduled trip which would have come ahead of a visit by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani to Saudi Arabia.
In an interview with TeleLiban Friday, Sleiman said a Saudi-Iranian understanding would reflect positively on Lebanon and the entire region.
He said Saudi Arabia and Iran, which wield great influence on rival Lebanese factions, can help defuse tensions and encourage the parties to cooperate and uphold national unity.
