BEIRUT: Authorities are searching for a Czech tourist who went missing last week while on a trip to a valley in north Lebanon, a security source told The Daily Star Monday.
Security forces have been searching since Thursday for Thomas Rezika, 46, who went missing Wednesday evening after sending text messages for help to his hotel in Bsharri while on a trek into the nearby Qadisha valley, the source who spoke on condition of anonymity said.
The deep valley carved by the Qadisha River lies within the Bsharri and Zghorta districts of north Lebanon.
The source said the search for Rezika began Thursday morning in the caves, passages and streams in and around Qadisha.
Authorities tracked text messages Rezika sent to the hotel after sundown Wednesday but the wide-scale search for the Czech national has yet to turn up other leads.
Police dogs and policemen could not reach certain trails because they were too steep and rugged, the source said.
Caretaker Telecoms Minister Nicolas Sehnawi had instructed officials to trace text messages Rezika sent asking for help.
