BEIRUT: Visiting Italian Defense Minister Roberta Pinotti held talks Tuesday with President Michel Sleiman and Prime Minister Tammam Salam to discuss international support for the Lebanese Army.

Pinotti told reporters after visiting Salam that she discussed with Lebanese leaders their expectations regarding assistance to the Army in light of an upcoming meeting for the International Support Group for Lebanon set to take place in Italy in June.

A preparatory meeting for the June conference is set to take place in Rome on April 10.

Pinotti emphasized the importance of international support for the Lebanese Army in stabilizing the country.

The minister also said her visit aims to support the Italian contingent within the United Nations Interim Forces in Lebanon, which she will visit to “congratulate them on their mission” in south Lebanon.

Pinotti, who arrived in Beirut on Monday, said she would also visit Defense Minister Samir Moqbel and Army chief Gen. Jean Kahwagi.
