Detained former Jumblatt aide admitted to hospital

File - Bahij Abou Hamzeh. (The Daily Star/Stringer)

BEIRUT: Prominent businessman Bahij Abu Hamzeh, the disgraced former aide of Walid Jumblatt, has been admitted to hospital, security sources told The Daily Star Tuesday, after he was taken into custody by Lebanese authorities a day earlier.

The sources said Abu Hamzeh was admitted to Al-Hayat hospital in Baabda shortly after his arrest Monday, but refused to disclose any details about what he was suffering from.

Abu Hamzeh was arrested on charges of embezzlement filed by Safa, a football team sponsored by the Progressive Socialist Party leader.

The lawsuit is one of several against Abu Hamzeh, the latest development marking a dramatic deterioration in relations between Jumblatt and the businessman, who ran the Druze leader’s real estate endeavors and managed his private properties for more than two decades.
