Activists working on the case of Manal Assi, the woman whose husband allegedly beat her to death two months ago, are urging the public and media to refrain from slandering her following a judicial report last week implying that she was having an affair. The family and local non-governmental organization Lebanese Independent Activists held a news conference at the Holiday Inn Dunes hotel in Verdun Tuesday asking the media to report on the incident responsibly and not damage Assi's reputation. If Assi were having an affair, activists say it could allow her murder to be interpreted as a crime of passion, potentially reducing the sentence for the perpetrator.Rowaida Mroue, coordinator with LIA, which is working with the Assi family to get Nhaily charged with her murder, dismissed the rumors of an affair as false.
