Hobeish: Civil Defense draft law will be adopted

BEIRUT: Future MP Hadi Hobeish said Tuesday that Parliament would adopt in its upcoming legislative session a draft law that would make Civil Defense volunteers full-time employees.

Hobeish made the announcement following a meeting chaired by the Interior Minister Nouhad Machnouk that was dedicated to discussing the draft law and several suggested amendments to it.

Civil Defense volunteers staged sit-ins Monday in Chekka, Sidon, Baalbek and Hermel to pressure Parliament to pass the draft law. They also sent an open letter calling on President Michel Sleiman, Parliament and the government to approve their request.

“The participants in the meeting have agreed to support the law written down by the municipalities and national defense parliament committee, with minor amendments that are in the interests of the volunteers,” Hobeish said.

“The amendments will be sent to the parliament’s secretariat at once, so that the law will be passed in Wednesday’s legislative session.”
