MEZYARA, Lebanon:The funeral of Lebanon’s slain honorary consul for the West African state of Benin, Assaad Shaghouri was held in the Mezyara town of Zghorta Sunday.
Lebanon’s Foreign Ministry Thursday said the killing of its honorary consul for the West African state of Benin was motivated by theft.
A ministerial statement said Shaghouri, a well-known businessman, was traveling to Lome in Togo from Benin’s economic capital of Cotonou late Wednesday when his car was sprayed with gunfire as it stopped at a red light.
“God bless his work in the Republic of Benin, he gained the love of its citizens and ecclesiastical officials because of his significant contribution to the development of the country and for providing jobs for its citizens” said Father Nabih al-Taras after the Gospel.
“He was a model for the Lebanese constituency and was a great help to the Lebanese abroad that is why Lebanese authorities appointed him the honorary consul of the Republic of Benin” said Taras.
Taras announced that Shaghouri was awarded the Lebanese Medal of Honor, while the state of Benin awarded him the National Medal and the Lebanese University the Medal of Honor.
The funeral was attended by a large number of ambassadors and consuls and prominent political, judicial and security figures. The family of the consul as well as a large crowd of Mezyara residents also joined.
The family accepted condolences at the church hall shortly after the funeral prayers.
