BEIRUT: A prisoner escaped from a hospital in the Bekaa Tuesday despite having been shot thrice two weeks prior, a security source told The Daily Star.

Mkheiber Ezzeddine escaped an intensive care room at Al-Rayan hospital in east Lebanon, 12 days after a shootout with Army troops had left him shot in the hand, abdomen and leg.

Ezzeddine has been kept in hospital under strict surveillance since July 24, but was able to escape Tuesday most likely with cooperation of hospital staff or security, the source said.

As a result, investigators will interrogate the nurses who were directly responsible for handling Ezzeddine, as well as the guards who were present at the time.

The fugitive was pursued initially by the Army because he was suspected of shooting at police and smuggling weapons.
