BEIRUT: Speaker Nabih Berri called a Parliament session for Aug. 12 in yet another attempt to elect a president of the republic, the National News Agency reported Thursday.

“The Speaker of Parliament, Nabih Berri, called for a plenary session on Tuesday August 12, at 12:00 to elect a president of the republic,” NNA said.

Ten sessions have been held since April to elect a successor for President Michel Sleiman, whose term expired on May 25.

The election is deadlocked by sharp divisions between the Hezbollah-led March 8 and rival March 14 coalitions, which have so far failed to agree on a compromise candidate.
