BEIRUT: The head of the Lebanese-Palestinian Dialogue Committee Hasan Mneimneh Thursday called on the U.N. to set up temporary camps for Palestinian refugees in safe areas inside Syria.

“The international community should fully play its role since it is responsible for the security and the safety of Palestinian refugees,” Mneimneh said following a meeting with officials from the U.N. Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees.

The meeting at the Lebanese-Palestinian Dialogue Committee headquarters at the Grand Serail in Downtown Beirut was attended by Margot Ellis, UNRWA’s deputy commissioner-general, and UNRWA Director in Lebanon Ann Desmor.

Mneimneh called on the U.N. Security Council to “establish temporary and safe camps inside Syrian territory to accommodate the large number of Palestinian refugees.”

He said the establishment of such camps “would enable the international community to assume its responsibilities towards them [Palestinians] by providing decent humanitarian conditions until the conflict is over [in Syria] and they can return home.”

Mneimneh underlined the need to organize Palestinian refugees haphazardly spread across Lebanon, "which is preventing U.N. agencies and humanitarian organizations from providing aid to them."
