BEIRUT: Free Patriotic Movement leader Michel Aoun, 80, underwent a minor operation Sunday after he broke his arm, an FPM statement said.

Speaking to The Daily Star, FPM sources said Aoun, who was admitted to Serhal Hospital, fell on his arm in the garden of his house in Rabieh, north of Beirut.

Aoun heads the largest Christian parliamentary bloc in Lebanon and is a presidential candidate backed by the March 8 coalition.

The sources said that FPM supporters considered what happened a “positive omen,” as the former general broke his arm before being tasked by then-outgoing President Amine Gemayel with forming a transitional military government in 1988.

Speaker Nabih Berri and Prime Minister Tammam Salam telephoned Aoun to check on his health. Environment Minister Mohammad Machnouk visited the FPM leader on Salam’s behalf.
