BEIRUT: Police Thursday said they arrested the father of a three-year-old Syrian boy who died earlier this month after succumbing to injuries from a severe beating.

In a statement, police said Mahmoud Fares, 3, fell on the ground after his father, 34-year-old Khalif Fares, struck him on his face and ears.

The boy was transferred to Jib Jenin Hospital with fractures to his rib cage and a brain hemorrhage but died a week later from complications.

The family lived in a Syrian refugee camp in east Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley.

The father was referred to the appropriate judiciary.
