BEIRUT: A Palestinian man was killed by stray bullet after celebrations broke out in refugee camps across Lebanon over a long-term truce that ended 50 days of fighting in Gaza, security sources told The Daily Star.

The accidental death of Omar Mohammad, 32, Tuesday night stirred tensions in the sprawling Ain al-Hilweh, the largest of the 12 Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon, as the family of the victim started shooting guns in the air in reprisals.

The sources said the local security force, made up of various Palestinian factions in the camp outside Sidon in south Lebanon, intervened quickly to ease tensions and prevent any escalation of the incident.

Palestinians in refugee camps in the north, Beirut and south Lebanon streamed into the streets Tuesday night to celebrate the truce, which they hailed as a victory achieved by Islamist militant group, Hamas, against Israel after more than seven weeks of fierce fighting that killed more than 2,000 Palestinians and left Gaza battered.
