HERMEL, Lebanon: A man critically wounded in the Jan. 16 bombing in the northeastern town of Hermel died early Monday, raising the death toll in the attack to six, security sources said.

Mohammad Issa al-Hiq died from severe wounds he sustained in the explosion that ripped through a government building in Hermel. The blast wounded more than 40 people.

The Nursa Front in Lebanon claimed responsibility for the bombing. The group said the attack was in retaliation for Hezbollah’s military involvement in Syria on the side of President Bashar Assad.

The group took credit for a similar bombing that targeted a gas station in Hermel on Saturday.

The southern suburbs of Beirut, where Hezbollah enjoys broad support, has also been the target of several car bombings in recent months.

Hiq’s funeral procession will be held in the afternoon.
