Army comes under fire during Baalbek raid

BAALBEK, Lebanon: The Army raided a house in the northern Bekaa Valley city of Baalbek after receiving a tip about the whereabouts of Julien George Antoun, a businessman who was kidnapped from the mountain town of Oyoun al-Siman in the district of Kesrouan.

Antoun, 27, left his home in Tabarja Tuesday evening on his way to the mountains. His car was found the next day outside the Val de Neige Ski Resort in Oyoun al-Siman.

The kidnappers demanded a $3 million ransom from the family of the young contractor, a security source told The Daily Star.

The Army closed the entrances of the Sharawneh neighborhood and requested reinforcement units.

During the raid armed men in the neighborhood fired gunshots and rocket-propelled grenades toward the Army, which responded to the source of the fire.

The exchange lasted for about an hour, at which point the Army erected checkpoints at the entrance to the notorious neighborhood and searched cars and residents.
