Man arrested over wife’s death in Beirut

BEIRUT: A Beirut resident facing accusations of beating his wife to death earlier this week was arrested shortly after midnight, security sources said Friday.

The sources said police arrested Mohammad Nhaily near his house in the Beirut neighborhood of Tariq al-Jadideh after the office of the Beirut prosecutor issued a criminal summons for the defendant.

Nhaily, a carpenter, reportedly beat his 34-year-old wife, Manal Assi, to death with a pressure cooker Wednesday and managed to flee while the neighbors and family members were preoccupied with Assi.

Assi’s family had filed a complaint against their son-in-law based on the medical report and the coroner’s examination of her body.
