BEIRUT/HERMEL, Lebanon: A defected Syrian army officer who heads a rebel group was arrested over the weekend near the Bekaa Valley border town of Arsal for illegally crossing into Lebanon, a security source said Monday.

The source said the Lebanese Army arrested former Brig. Gen. Radwan Ayyoush Sunday as he tried to enter Lebanon illegally.

It is not known when Ayyoush deserted the military to join the Free Syrian Army in its war against President Bashar Assad’s forces.

Ayyoush is the leader of the FSA-affiliated Al-Assi Brigades.

A Lebanese Army statement Sunday said a border patrol unit in the Arsal area of Wadi Hmayyed arrested two Syrian nationals, identified as Radwan Mahmoud Ayyoush and Omar Mahmoud Othman, for illegally entering Lebanon.

It said interrogation was being conducted with the pair under judicial supervision.
