Future marks 40 days since Shatah’s assassination
A+ A-

BEIRUT: The Future Movement over the weekend marked 40 days since the assassination of former Minister Mohammad Shatah, hailing the man as a moderate who wished for a just and prosperous Lebanon.

The service, attended by Future Movement MPs and Shatah’s family, was held at the mausoleum of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri in Martyrs’ Square.

Representing former Prime Minister Saad Hariri at the ceremony, Future Movement MP Ghazi Youssef said Shatah’s aspirations were for a Lebanon that was “a civilized country, based on freedom and diversity … and moderation and openness.”

“Shatah had believed that keeping Lebanon away from regional and international disputes is the path for the country’s political, social, economic stability and security,” Youssef said.

“He also believed that if democracy were adopted correctly in Lebanon, it would be capable of producing a strong, fair and prosperous country,” he said.

Shatah, a senior aide of Hariri, was killed in a car bomb attack on Dec. 27, 2013, in Downtown Beirut along with seven other people. The blast also wounded dozens of people.
