BEIRUT: The formation of a new Cabinet and the presidential election due this year are two separate issues, said Future MP Atef Majdalani Tuesday, in an apparent response to Speaker Nabih Berri who recently tried to link the two matters.

“There is no link between the Cabinet formation and the presidential election,” Majdalani told the voice of Lebanon radio station.

“The Cabinet formation and presidential election should be held in order as the constitution stipulates and according to the democratic and Parliamentary system.”

“All Lebanese groups and political parties should abide by the Constitution and the democratic systems,” Majdalani said.

Berri recently suggested holding early presidential election in a bid to alleviate any concerns the March 14 alliance might have over the Cabinet formation.

Berri was also responding to the March 14 coalition which has accused the Hezbollah-led March 8 camp of seeking a vacuum in the government and the post of the presidency.

President Michel Sleiman, on his part, implicitly rejected the suggestion by the speaker and said the presidential election and Cabinet formation are not linked to each other.
