TRIPOLI, Lebanon: Three people, including two soldiers, were wounded Friday when the Lebanese Army clashed with gunmen guarding a mosque in the northern city of Tripoli.

Security sources said the clash broke out during Friday prayers outside Al-Rahman mosque in the Tripoli neighborhood of Bab al-Tabbaneh.

They said the Army, as part of a security plan to eliminate armed presence in Tripoli, exchanged gunfire with what locals refer to as “mosque security guards.”

The sources, who spoke to The Daily Star on condition of anonymity, said the nearly one-hour fight left two soldiers and a local resident wounded.

The fighting ended after the military sent reinforcements to the area.
