One dead in Beirut accident

BEIRUT: One person was killed and five others were injured Thursday in a traffic accident in the Beirut district of Ashrafieh.

A truck driver reportedly lost control of his vehicle after the brakes failed, crashing into seven cars in front of him, the Traffic Management Center said. Ambulances rushed to the scene to evacuate the injured from several cars parked nearby which were badly damaged.

The accident outside Hotel Dieu Hospital caused heavy traffic in the bustling area.

Also Thursday, a car overturned and fell into the Beirut River.

Driver Fuad Elias Chahine, 25, suffered a number of injuries and was transported to Mar Youssef Hospital, where his condition remains stable, the center reported.
