BEIRUT: President Michel Sleiman called Sunday his Egyptian counterpart Adli Mansour and congratulated him over the approval of the new constitution in Egypt.
Sleiman congratulated Mansour “over the results of the referendum and over the Egyptian people’s choice for democracy and moderation,” a statement from the president’s office said.
He also hailed the pioneering role of Egypt at both Arab and international levels and expressed his hope for further prosperity in the country.
More than 98 percent of voters backed the new Egyptian constitution in a referendum this week. Although support was high, the turnout for the referendum – just under 40 percent – was lower than some officials had indicated.
